In-School Wall Climbing (Mock-Lead)
Suitable for Grades 7 - 12

Print

High wall climbing is done on a wall 8’ (2.5 m) or higher, possibly to the ceiling which may incorporate many features such as slant back inclines. High walls have a belay bar at the top for “top rope climbing” or “top roping”. Each climber wears a climbing harness and helmet (recommended) and works with a belayer wearing a harness and helmet (recommended) and uses a belay device (GRI GRI).

Supervision

  • Indoor MOCK-LEAD climbing instructors must be certified with a minimum of a current Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) Indoor Climbing Gym Instructor LEVEL 2 (CGI2) and follow industry standards as outlined in the CGI Tech Manual.
  • Ensure participants have completed waivers and belay tests when required.
  • Ensure participants manage their personal safety while climbing
  • Ensure rules are followed.
  • Respond to accidents and provide first aid if required.
  • Ensure participants utilise equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
  • Constant, active supervision is required.
  • Suggested 1:8 ratio of certified instructors to student climbers.
  • Safety and emergency procedures should be well established and rehearsed and known by all participants in all climbing settings.

Instructional Considerations

  • All students must receive formal instruction including wall safety, and movement and climbing techniques.
  • Teacher / instructor should be familiar with the climbing facility.
  • Students should be allowed to select the challenge of their choice, as long as they do not exceed their own limits.
  • Prior to each climb, student climbers and belayers must be checked by the instructor.
  • Protection placement by students must not be allowed - pre-clipped quickdraws must be present.

Equipment / Facilities

  • Ropes and associated climbing equipment designed specifically for indoor wall climbing must be used.
  • A correct base anchor plate belay system or belay off the harness, incorporating a mechanical belay system must be used. A Gri Gri is the preferred belay device for all school activities.
  • A climbing helmet certified by UIAA, ASTM or CE is highly recommended for  climbers and belayers.
  • 2 1/2” mats should extend approximately 6 feet from the base of the climbing wall.
  • High wall facilities should be inspected daily, monthly and annually by certified staff and on a minimum 3 year basis by a Professional Engineer.
