Objective of the Game
This outdoor competition resembles the game of Volleyball. It was played with a small mooseskin ball. Teams consisted of up to ten players each.
Equipment
- A ball made from mooseskin, about the size of a fist. It is stuffed with moose hair until it is almost as hard as a baseball. A marten tail is attached to it.
Playing Area
- Any open, fairly level space will do. There is no clearly defined out of bounds. The playing area has to be large enough to allow two teams of up to ten players to play.
Teams and Players
- Up to ten players can play on one team. It has not been documented who would play this game.
How to Play
Preparation
- A centre line is marked on the ground. There is no out of bounds, and no other lines are required.
Starting Position
- The teams take up position on their side of the centre line. The position taken up by the players has not been described, but the organization of Toss Ball was probably similar to that of Volleyball.
Movement
- Using their bare hands, the players begin to volley the ball back and forth across the centre line. It has not been described how often players on a team may volley the ball before it has to be played back into the other team's half. Participants decide before the beginning of play on the number of contacts allowed.
Duration and End of Game
- Every time the ball touches the ground, a point is given against the team on whose side the ball fell to the ground.
- The teams decide before the beginning of the competition on the number of points required to win a game.
Safety Considerations
Players should be mindful of eachothers space.
