Objective of the Game

The Stick Jump is a test of reaction time, flexibility, and muscular power. The competitor holds the broom handle in front of themselves in an overhand grip about shoulder-width apart.

The competitor attempts to jump or ‘skip’ through the loop created between their body, arms, and the broom handle. A successful jump is counted if the competitor completes the jump and lands on their feet.

Each jump is measured by the grip distance on the broom handle. After each completed jump, the hands are moved 5 cm (2 in) closer together to add difficulty.

Equipment

  1. Broom handle or similar implement.
  2. Gymnastics mat

Playing Area

A gym is the best playing area for the Stick Jump. The playing area should be level and a gymnastics mat should be used.

Teams and Players

Stick Jump is an individual event.

Safety Considerations

The playing area must be cleaned and checked for objects and debris that could cause injuries in the event of a fall. Gymnastics mats should be used as there is a significant tripping hazard with the Stick Jump.
