Constant supervision by a certified NLS Lifeguard is required.
On-site supervision by a teacher is recommended following initial skill instruction and after all safety concerns have been emphasized.
A teacher may also act as a referee for game situations.
Instructional Considerations
Prior to giving students access to deep water (above chest height) for swimming or other activities students must be able to meet the Swim to Survive Standard, a sequence of three skills: roll into deep water, tread water for 1 minute, and swim 50 m.
Fingernails and toenails should be closely trimmed.
A one piece bathing suit is recommended for female participants.
Weaker swimmers can be supported by use of a life jacket/PFD or float belt.
Students must be aware of where the ball is at all times to prevent anyone from getting hit in the head from a pass. Swim goggles should not be worn to prevent any damage to the eye if this were to happen.
Students should begin to play with no contact to focus on the skill development of swimming with the ball, passing, and shooting.
Equipment/Facilities
Shallow water pools can be utilized to ensure basic skills are met prior to transitioning to deep water pools.
Standard water polo balls provide better grip when in the water, but are quite hard. Students can learn the passing and shooting motion with a softer ball initially.
Soft inflatable nets can be used to prevent injury while transporting and setting up a field of play.
