Instructional Considerations
Roller skiing on open roads has an inherent level of risk.
Choose terrain that matches student ability.
Avoid areas with steep downhills, stop signs at bottom of hills, railway crossing, potholes, and other hazards.
Teachers should caution students about use of poles, especially when working close to others.
Teachers should encourage use of a buddy system.
Equipment/Facilities
Correctly-fitting approved bicycle or in-line skating helmets must be worn, i.e., CSA, Snell, or CPSC.
High visibility clothing or safety vests is recommended.
Inexperienced roller skiers should be advised to wear gloves, wrist guards, knee- and elbow-pads.
Students should do a safety inspection of equipment before each use.
Teachers should familiarize students with the route and boundaries before allowing students to tour. All touring must be led by qualified supervisors.
Equipment should be checked to ensure proper fitting of boots, proper sizing of skis and poles and suitability of equipment for the activity. Instructors should instruct students on securing boots in bindings and ensure they are properly secured.
