Supervision

On-site supervision by a certified NCCP (National Coach Certification Program) Equestrian Instructor/Coach is recommended at all times for all equine activities and for all instruction/coaching.

Equipment

  • Approved ASTM certified equestrian specific riding helmets must be worn when working around or riding horses.
  • Helmets must be properly fitted to the rider so they do not slip or move around on the head and should not have passed their 5-year expiry date or suffered any type of impactful falls prior to use.
  • Closed-toed footwear must be worn at all times around horses.
  • When riding, closed-toed footwear with a heel (half-inch to one inch in depth) should be worn to prevent the foot from sliding through the stirrup.
  • It is recommended that ASTM/SEI certified safety vests be worn as well during riding activities - this is considered additional equipment and is something riders may  choose to purchase at some point, but is not required to start.
  • Tack (girth, bridle, saddle, stirrups etc.) must be fitted to the horse properly, and should be adjusted for each student and checked by the certified instructor/coach prior to beginning riding activities.
  • Closely fitted thicker pants (jeans with a flat inseam or jodphers/breeches) and shirts that are neatly tucked in are recommended for riding activities; riders should remove all jewelry and refrain from wearing baggy or loose fitting clothing, scarves, hoodies or anything that may get caught up in any of the equipment.

Facilities

When considering whether an equine facility is suitable for equestrian activities, the following is what should be sought:

  • Supervision by an NCCP certified instructor/coach at all times.
  • Enclosed arena for riding, with a fence or gate that is closed during lessons.
  • Clear space for handling a horse before and after lessons.
  • Barn aisles and property in general should be tidy.
  • Fences on the property should be in good condition.
  • Arenas and paddocks should be well maintained.
  • Horses available for riding lessons should look healthy and alert, and should be well-trained with good mannerisms and a calm demeanor.

Risk Management

An Alberta Equestrian Federation (AEF) membership should be required. This membership comes with liability insurance and accident, death and dismemberment insurance that protects the child/youth when participating in equestrian related activities.
