Supervision

  • On-site supervision is highly recommended following initial skill instruction and after all safety concerns have been emphasized.

Instructional Considerations

  • Structured warm-ups that focus on stretching, strengthening, improving balance and movements prior to playing.
  • Basic skills should be mastered before moving to more complex skills.
  • Off-ice instruction, including safety rules, should precede on-ice instruction.
  • All curlers should observe rules of etiquette.
  • Students should be instructed to not step over curling rocks, but to walk around them.
  • Appropriate stretching exercises should be taught prior to participation.
  • Students should be instructed to never run on the ice.
  • Students  should never lie or kneel on the ice, as it causes damage to the playing surface.
  • Rocks are not to be lifted off the ice.

Equipment/Facilities

  • Curling rink should be used.
  • Curling brooms and sliders.
  • Youth under the age of 13 – unless they have achieved two (2) years of on-ice training – strongly recommend they wear approved head protection.
  • Appropriate footwear includes curling shoes or clean indoor running shoes with rubber soles.
  • Sliders are to be used only when throwing a curling rock and never while sweeping
  • Clear backboards.
  • Curling stones in single file instead of in pairs.
